Barbara Stephens

Nurse Consultant for Heart Failure
University Hospital
Aintree, Liverpool

Barbara Stephens' career began more than twenty years ago at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, in Central Liverpool. In 1992 she moved to the University Hospital Aintree, where she was instrumental in the commissioning and planning of a ‘new’ purpose built Coronary Care Unit, as well as bringing about the development of the Thrombolysis team.

Throughout this period, she was also regularly training on a range of courses which resulted in a teaching secondment to Edge Hill University College in Ormskirk. Her involvement in the Study to evaluate the effectiveness of Nurse-led Intervention in the management of outpatients with heart Failure in 2001 was pivotal in her career. After bringing about the development of the Heart Failure Service within the University Hospital Aintree, she immediately embarked upon this research study which evaluated the effectiveness of nurse led intervention in the management of heart failure.

The Heart Failure Service within the University Hospital Aintree in Liverpool has become a major innovation amongst heart failure services throughout the North West. It is respected internally and nationally – which became evident following its award for NHS Beacon Status in 2000.

She went on to present the positive findings from the Study to evaluate the effectiveness of Nurse-led Intervention in the management of outpatients with heart Failure study at the 2002 World Congress in Cardiology in Sydney, Australia and at the British Cardiac Society in Harrogate. The attention that the study attracted earned her role model status for many developing services.

Heavily involved in developing and mentoring community heart failure nurses, in 2002 she was appointed within the department as nurse consultant and assisted in the development of local heart failure guidelines for a prospective seamless service.

She has worked tirelessly in heart failure education, both in primary and secondary care, and has been active within local networks, in an effort to constantly develop heart failure management and improve services.
